Erika Beard-Irvine

Ascension Class of 1983

Pediatrician, US Navy

"My time at Ascension gave me a strong start for my future education. The small class sizes allowed me to have a challenging educational experience in a warm, nurturing atmosphere. In a time of cuts in public school programs, I had art, music, PE, and religion classes while still getting a good foundation in the basics of reading, writing, and arithmetic. I recommend Ascension to any parents who want their children to have a strong foundation on which to build their futures."

About Our School

Welcome to Ascension Lutheran School!
Home of the Eagles!

Ascension Lutheran School, located in Landover Hills, Maryland, was founded in 1952 as a ministry of Ascension Lutheran Church.  The members of Ascension Church established a Kindergarten program which operated in the church's chapel.

In 1964 the decision was made to expand Ascension School and develop a full elementary program, and in 1967, Ascension's first 6th grade class was graduated.  In 1993, a Middle School was added to that program.  In 2001, four new classrooms, a music room, and a renovated Kindergarten room were dedicated to the glory of God.

Ascension is accredited by the Middle States Commission of Elementary Schools and National Lutheran Schools Accreditation.  Ascension is also a State of Maryland Approved School, which means that students that take Algebra 1 and Spanish 1 can receive high school credit.

Ascension offers a strong preparatory academic curriculum and presents an experienced and caring faculty.  At Ascension we strongly affirm that  The Christian Teacher Makes the Difference in the quality of the educational program.  With a student body of less than two hundred, we are small enough to address the needs of the individual child in caring, Christ-centered, context.

Ascension graduates are highly sought out by area secondary schools.  Each year, Ascension graduates are accepted into prestigious private schools such as Archbishop Carroll, Elizabeth Seton, DeMatha, and Bishop McNamara.  Many of our students also qualify for the special science and technology programs offered by a select group of public high schools such as Eleanor Roosevelt and C.H. Flowers.  The excellent foundation in study skills which is emphasized at Ascension is well known and respected by the area high schools.
